Weekly Focus of Learning:

We're All Wonders by R J Palacio

This week we are exploring Sam's favourite book, 'We're all Wonders' by R J Palacio.  The story follows the adventures of Auggie who is not an ordinary child but he does ordinary things.  The story illustrates kindness and acceptance that everyone is different and everyone is a wonder, if only the could see it.

In the story Auggie puts on his helmet and flys into space, so this week we are revisiting the solar system, learning to count backwards from 10-0 then blasting off and playing ball with our friends on the school field.  We have also been encouraging the children to think how they are different to their friends but  explaing that we are all unique and special.

Week Beginning 19th May 2025

The Wonky Donkey by Craig Smith (Week 2)

Our activities continue this week to be based on 'The Wonky Donkey' story.  Each child was given ears to colour in and were then supported to carefully cut them out with scissors before a member of staff stapled them to a headband to make a pair of ears to wear.  When using the scissors, some of our children were able to advise the staff to be careful as they are sharp and you might cut your finger.  Such thoughtfulness from our children is very kind and special.

Once the ears were completed,  and with their Wonky Donkey ears proudly on their heads, the children pretended to be the Wonky Donkey giggling as they stood on one leg exclaiming, 'Hee-Haw!'

Bobby using the scissors with good control to cut along the lines.  Well done Bobby!

Elsa trying her ears for size!

The Wonky Donkey by  Craig Smith (Week 1)

The Wonky Donkey story is one of Tracey's favourite books. It combines humour with fun rhymes and tells the story of a quirky donkey with unique characteristics. As readers turn each page, they learn something new about the donkey, leading to a humorous and entertaining conclusion!

Each keyworker asked their key child if they enjoyed the story and which part was their favourite. One of our children recalled that the donkey had one eye, three legs, a tail and was 'stinky' before adding, "Maybe his mummy will give him a bath!"

Tracey also made a lovely donkey picture which required painting the children's feet grey and making a footprint on paper to represent the Wonky Donkey which they did outside in the beautiful sunshine.  Tracey even had her own foot painted which tickled!  The children were also keen to be the wonky donkey and loved listening to the animated song version of the book!

Hope having fun being the Wonky Donkey!

Jacob looking at his favourite page of the story!

Oliver giving his donkey picture just one eye!

Kitchen Disco by Clare Foges & Al Murphy (Week 2)

This week, we have continued our learning focus centred on "Kitchen Disco" by exploring healthy and unhealthy foods with the children. We asked them to sort pictures of various items we might eat into these categories. They explained their understanding confidently, recognising that fruit and vegetables are good for us. One of our children clearly explained that unhealthy food is called 'junk' food and that junk foods contain lots of sugar, which might cause your teeth to fall out!

For snack time, the children enjoyed watermelon, and the one we bought this week was huge and very heavy, but we managed to eat it all over two weeks!

Finally, in the story, the grapes danced a 'Conga',so we all became grapes and did the same!

Week Beginning 28th April 2025

Kitchen Disco by Clare Foges & Al Murphy (Week 1)

This week our story has been chosen by Lisa, 'Kitchen Disco'.  Lisa particularly likes the vibrant illustrations, the rhythmic writing style and the funky feel of  'moving your hips and shaking your pips'!  Some of our activities this week have included making a fruit salad and using a juicer to squeeze oranges, as well as exploring the texture and a closer look at some of the fruit depicted in the story such as a 'spikey' pineapple and a 'hairy' coconut.

After snack, the children also practised washing their own cups and plates themselves in a bowl of warm soapy water, an important life skill in the future!  We have also explored different meanings for the same word, particularly 'pair' and a 'pear' by searching for hidden socks and matching magnetic fruit stuck on the shed to make a 'pair'.

Well done Adam! Good job you are strong as it takes strength to squeeze an orange!

Ezra practising his washing up skills!

Jacob described the pineapple as, "prickly".

Week Beginning 22nd April 2025

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson (Week 2)

This week the children have continued to be inspire in their learning based on Kathryn's favourite story, 'Room on the Broom' especially in our outside garden.

The children have also been practising their counting skills by counting objects related to the story as well as recognising numbers 1-10. The children then used their writing skills to represent a given number.  One of our children explained that they loved counting objects, and it's like doing home as their sister does!  The continued good weather has also given the children  further opportunities to continue making potions and riding broomsticks in our outdoor play area.
